Whether for the income or training, many Sunlake students opt to get jobs during summer break. Joseph Houk, a senior, began working at a KFC located near Bexley on August 2nd. “It’s a very good distance between school my house and where I plan to go to college, USF,” he explained.
Explaining his job role, Joseph shared that while he was originally hired to work as a cook, he began taking shifts of another coworker, a dishwasher, who sadly passed away. He now mostly fills that role. He explained that he has managed to figure out how to get most of his work done quickly, “so I can just chill for a majority of time spent there.” He also mentioned how he is allowed to listen to music while he works, helping to pass the time. Joseph said he hopes to stay working at his current location but if things don’t work out in terms of college, he stated he was, “hoping to transfer to a KFC closer to USF because it’s a good job and can hold me through college.” When asked to share any stories from work, Joseph recounted a customer who, “repeatedly comes weekly and orders something and then gets upset and yells at my manager on duty for no reason.”
Getting a job can be a great opportunity for students at Sunlake to gain valuable real world experience and build work ethic. Many students continue working into the school year, requiring them to build good time management skills necessary to balance school and work schedules.
