The Black Student Union is a devoted club here at Sunlake Highschool. Their main goal is to learn, celebrate, and support the black community in a loving and safe environment. Taylor Mack, a senior at Sunlake, recently joined the club. She joined to support her good friend, Zayda Thomas, who is the founder of BSU! The BSU often organizes discussions and activities centered around black culture and history. It serves as a platform for advocacy and activism for people of color. The Black Student Union ensures that the students’ voices are heard and their actions don’t go unrecognized. When asked what she wanted to take away from the BSU, Taylor stated “I’m hoping to learn more about my own community. I’ve always enjoyed hearing {about} other peoples experiences”. On August 1st, Taylor and Zayda went recruiting for new members at freshman orientation. The two stayed for about 2 and half hours and had many students sign up and not just freshmen. Great job girls! “My advice would be to just join,” Taylor commented, “you can meet some cool people and make new friends”. She has enjoyed her time participating with fellow members of the club and always talks about how welcoming they are. The BSU is certainly a club with power and we hope they will never lose their spirt!
