Sophomore Katelin Wilcox did various things to prepare and evacuate efficiently for Hurricane Milton. It was projected to hit Tampa Bay directly as a category three, so before Katelin and her parents left, they put shutters up and placed blankets and towels around the doors to help prevent flooding into the house. As they were packing, she added that it felt like they were moving. Katelin evacuated early Wednesday morning to Pensacola. It took about 6-7 hours to get there. The traffic wasn’t bad considering they left at a grueling time on purpose to avoid chaos and the backup on all the main roadways. Katelin’s favorite thing she did there was visit family and friends and hang out at the beach. “I also ran a cross-country race in Alabama even. Despite the race being very hilly and difficult, I loved it.” Katelin came in with a 19:33 for the 5k and placed 4th in the entire race. Katelin loves to run and race, “I love cross country, every course is different which makes it fun.” Katelin and her family came back after the race on Saturday and were pleased to have no damages to their house.

About the Contributor
Hello, my name is Alexa Hemmers. I am a part of a group of new yearbook staffers as a sophomore. I enjoy writing for our school newspaper because each article will be about a different occasion, and we interview different people each time. My favorite things to do in my free time are run, go to the beach with my family and hanging out with my boyfriend and teammates. My teammates from Sunlake cross country and track are like family to me because some of us have known each other since sixth and seventh grade. I am excited to learn how to enhance my writing and construct the best yearbook filled with memories.
