Sunlake’s Homecoming game is often looked forward to with much anticipation. Many students were happily awaiting the game and were very excited to see who would win and who would lose. Along with the students, the football team was also looking forward to the game. So, imagine how everyone felt when heavy rain delayed and nearly cancelled one of the most important games of the season. Junior, Mekell King, who is on the football team, said he was, “…feeling good before the game. I was completely ready to dominate.” But unfortunately, the weather had other plans. Mekell expressed that the rain didn’t affect his performance and whether he was ready for the game. “The rain does play a factor, but it never discourages me…the delay was annoying because with all of the emotions we were eager to come out and play,” Mekell explained. After a few hours, the rain had finally let up, and Mekell and the team were relieved that they could finally play. Unfortunately, after all of the hardships, Sunlake’s football team lost the homecoming game. Mekell personally thinks that the team did a good job. “The game went good, I just really wish we had won.” He gave Gulf’s team credit where it was due. “The other team played good. They executed when it mattered and that’s all that matters.” Even though the game had not gone entirely how everyone had wished, Mekell felt good about the work put in beforehand and the effort everyone put in. Mekell thought the game was good the way it was, but if he could do one thing differently he’d, “…spread more motivation to my team.” Hopefully next year Mekell’s motivation to his team members will earn the football team some well deserved wins.
