On October 5th, every Floridan was informed of another hurricane coming to town, right after we just got hit by Hurricane Helene. Unfortunately this hurricane was worse, it was a category 5, and a lot of damage happened in our sunshine state. Thankfully, this amazing sophomore at Sunlake High School named Alexis Keith helped out after the hurricane. She first heard about the hurricane through weather alerts on her phone, and due to her phone sending her alerts, she got one asking for donations at a shelter. She stated, “Once I got that notification, I got motivated to help, and me and my family rushed around the house trying to find as many pillows and blankets we could donate.” Alexis is involved with Sunlake’s Hawkeye program, so she worked with the whole team to collect old donated clothes at a Sunlake football game. After the hurricane, she helped around her house as well. She said, “I helped my mom pick up shingles that had fallen off my roof, and took down our shutters.” When she was asked what challenges she faced while helping out after the hurricane, she stated, “None of our shutters fit our windows, so we had to find other ways to get them to stay on, so we asked our neighbors to help and they did.” Alexis did a lot more during Hurricane Milton; she helped out so much so a big thank you to her!
