On November 1st, Matthew Gordon played his second to last football game. Matthew is a Senior who will be graduating this year. He likes to go to the gym, play pick-up basketball, and “…spending time with friends and family.” At first, Matthew was not a football player, in fact, he was a “…baseball kid…” who never got a chance to play on the high school team. Even though Matthew had “…the skills and technique…” no coaches took a chance on him. Then out of nowhere, rumors turned his life upside down. While on Vacation and dealing with personal stuff, Matthew “…decided to try football since I had some experience.” Matthew stepped out of his comfort zone and in the end, “…it led to playing varsity for two years.” Matthew made amazing relationships with his teammates and coaches and “…learned a lot of valuable lessons throughout the journey…”. On the day of Senior Football Night, all of his family came onto the field. Matthew described having his family on the field as “…the best feeling ever…” and how he has never “…had the chance to have my whole family all together to come support me…”. Unfortunately, Matthew’s grandmother passed away during the summer, but he knew in his heart “…that she was there that day.” Later that night, Matthew and his team won the game. He said that he had a mix of “…pride and joy knowing that all of our hard work is finally paying off.” and that “…it does not feel real that it is the last game that I am going to be playing on our field.” He said that he is looking forward to Butter bowl and a chance “…to take back what is ours in the first place.” Matthew looked back at his high school career and said that his top 3 memories were “…my homecoming of junior year, winning the musical chairs at the pep rally and the whole team running up to me, and participating in skit night...” which is something he never thought of doing. Matthew said that it is overwhelming being a senior; between keeping up with assignments and filling out college applications, it’s not always easy. After Matthew graduates, he wants to mix his love for sports and business and to see how he will “…blend my interests and passions.”
