During the week of October 7th to the 13th a major hurricane hit Florida and the eye of the hurricane hit Sarasota. Tampa got part of eye wall therefore effecting a lot of people in our town. Sunlake was a shelter for all the people in evacuation zones with a mandatory evacuation. One student Hailey O’ Nolan, a senior at Sunlake, shares her experience during the hurricane. She said, “I actually was a little scared about this hurricane and the damage it would bring. My experience consisted of spending a couple of nights with and later on celebrating my best friend Gabby’s 18th birthday with all of our close friends.” When asked what she did to prepare for the hurricane she said, “We filled our bathtubs with water and stocked up on things we could eat without access to power. We made sure we had a generator and power outlets to charge our phones in case we lost power.” A lot of people lost power and were out of power for days after hurricane Helene. “We didn’t evacuate the state but we did spend time away from our house in our relatives house because it was more sturdy and safer for my family,” said Hailey. A lot of people evacuated even if they weren’t in an evacuation zone because of how bad this storm was forecasted to be. Luckily everyone stayed safe while also having fun during this powerful hurricane.
