You’re looking out into the dark sky, lighted by the stadium lights, when all of a sudden your drawn back to the sound a whistle and a ball rolling across the grass. Nerves are high as the crowd starts cheering. Welcome to another night of Sunlake soccer. Soccer is known for its fast-paced, unpredictable nature, its the perfect sport to keep fans on the edge of their seats. From the opening whistle to the final goal, the game moves quickly, with moments of action happening in an instant. Whether it’s a breakaway run, perfect slide tackle or an incredible save, the intensity of the game is real. The Seahawks have played five games this season, winning four and tying one. David Guiterrez, a Senior at Sunlake, has been playing soccer for 10 years. He said, “The team is really good this year and I hope we continue playing as good as we have.”
The first few games were nothing short of exciting. The opening match saw the team face off against a solid opponent and what followed was a rollercoaster of heart-stopping action. The defense always held firm, with the goalkeeper pulling off lots of jaw-dropping saves that had the crowd gasping. But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. The team faced 1-1 draw against Berkley Prep, but these boys didn’t let it discourage them. Instead, it pushed them to work even harder, fine-tuning their passing, shooting, and communication.
One of the most exciting part of the high school soccer season is Champions League. Tampa Bays top ten champions league is an opportunity for the top schools in the Tampa area to be recognized for talent. Teams can only join by invite only and this year Sunlake welcomes the opportunity to compete. Allister Boostrom, a Senior and Goalkeeper for Sunlake high school stated, “I like the concept of building a league where the best teams in the Tampa Bay area can play matches against each other which may not typically be played.”
