For many students, Veterans Day is a time to reflect, honor, and give thanks to those who have served in the military. For Sunlake High School senior Ricardo Vila, the day holds a special significance because of his family’s connection to the armed forces. “My grandpa served in World War II as an Air Force pilot,” Ricardo shared. “Every Veterans Day, I make sure to call and thank him, and if possible, I spend time with him.” Ricardo’s appreciation for Veterans Day is personal and heartfelt. He emphasizes the importance of remembering the sacrifices veterans have made to protect our freedoms. “Veterans Day is all about being grateful for those who are willing to put themselves at risk to protect the rest of us and honoring those who passed,” he explained. Ricardo’s tradition of calling his grandfather not only strengthens their bond but also reminds him of the courage and dedication veterans have shown throughout history. “Just taking a moment to say thank you makes a difference,” he said. “It’s a small thing, but it means a lot.” Ricardo encourages his classmates to use the day as an opportunity to reach out to the veterans in their lives or simply reflect on the sacrifices made for our country.
