From small, trendy ‘micro tattoos’ to large, full body works, every piece of ink has an importance to its wearer. As the art of tattooing develops, we continue to expand on the reasonings people get them. Even our own students at Sunlake High School show unique and creative pieces. Whether it is in memorial, connection to a culture or history, or celebrating personal growth, every tattoo holds its meaning.
Tattoos can be a fantastic way to remember a valuable time, person, or pet in your life. We can see many examples including dog or cat paws, faces, and more being inked. A date or name that has significance to the loved one can be added as well. Some get designs inspired by places they have visited and travelled to. Unforgettable experiences make an intriguing tattoo and provide a fun story to tell. Mr. Caleb Coll is planning an arm sleeve tattoo with the goal of representing essential moments in his life. When asked about how he wanted it to show these things, he expressed “I would like to have a sleeve made, pictures and symbols that represent some of my best memories. Maybe music notes for guitar, a silhouette of a parachute for skydiving, a portrait of my daughter for parenthood, gears, or a helmet for racing.” As displayed, there are countless ways a tattoo can hold memories for someone. Everyone has a unique history and background, and each design can express that.
A substantial portion of a person’s past lies in their culture, religious beliefs, and traditions. Whether it is waving your country’s flag proudly, preaching your beliefs or passing down family values, we all convey the foundation we were built upon. Outlining the borders of one’s country or designs from the flag of your homeland are some ways people show appreciation and pride through tattoos. These are a few of countless examples and creative depictions. Within cultures, ink holds deep meaning. They serve as a rite of passage into manhood, an indication of status, and a sign of protection. “In many cultures, they are seen as a symbol of purity. They can be a rite of passage, ensuring social acceptance.” (Tattoo Culture Around the World, medermlaserclinic.com). Even Egyptian mummies were found with tattoos on their body. It is seen as a sacred practice in many areas globally. Family emblems are shared between parents and their children to show a bond. Close relatives or spouses get matching tattoos, displaying a connection.
As we progress in life we grow and learn, overcoming hurdles and challenges. A notable example of how tattoos can display this is the semicolon project. It was created to provide information and help to those struggling with mental health or who have lost a loved one to suicide. “Anyone who had ever struggled with a mental illness would draw a semicolon on their wrist and post a photo. A semicolon symbolized that a sentence wasn’t over yet, and neither was their life.” (projectsemicolon.com). It has become a popular tattoo that represents growth and powering through difficult points. Designs are created around it for additional depth to its meaning, like a butterfly to express new beginnings.
Overall, tattoos can have a multitude of reasons for being important to someone. It roots us in our cultures, our growth, and experiences. As the branches extend, we can predict the future of tattoos and their significance. The spread of information and knowledge brings us together and brings innovative ideas. There are endless possibilities for the future of tattoos, and we await eagerly to see their potential.
