Junior Alexa Cadenas has always considered Veterans Day to be a special holiday, but this year it holds even more importance. Her cousin is currently at boot camp to eventually serve in the Marines, and while she’s not yet a veteran, Alexa knows that her cousin’s dedication to the marines means she will be one soon. “Even though she’s not a veteran yet, I know she’s working so hard right now, and it’s a lot on her,” Alexa said. “It really makes me emotional when I think about how much she’s doing, and I can’t wait for her to come home.”
Alexa and her cousin grew up together and Alexa witnessed her cousin’s decision to join the marines. Although it was kind of random and out of nowhere, it still feels surreal. “It’s crazy to see her make this big decision,” Alexa reflected. “But I support every moment of it.” The two stay connected through letters, and Alexa eagerly awaits the chance to respond and send messages back and forth.
For Veterans Day, Alexa wore camo jorts to stay on theme, and her favorite part of the holiday is reflecting on how important it is to honor all those who fought for the country. She takes pride in celebrating the sacrifices made by veterans and looks forward to the day when her cousin will return home as a part of that proud tradition.
