Mr. Coffey is a first-year teacher here at Sunlake. He teaches algebra, geometry, and algebra 2 honors. Many of the students that have him say that he is one of the best teachers, because of his laid-back bubbly personality. Also, students of Mr. Coffey claim that he is amazing at teaching his students in an effective way.
Mr. Coffey discovered his love for math during his years in college. When I asked Mr. Coffey why he discovered it so late on in his life, he responded, “My geometry and algebra 2 teacher made my math class extremely boring for me. They are my motivation for teaching because they remind me every day that it is so important to make learning math a fun subject. Not something to be scared of because of all the scary and complicated numbers it involves.”
In class, it is undoubtably clear that Mr. Coffey loves seeing his students succeed in class. When I pointed that out while speaking to him, Mr. Coffey expressed, “It makes me feel good about helping people. That is the whole reason why I started teaching.”
Mr. Coffey said he has a goal to help give math a good name to all his students, and teach math in a more fun, interactive, and concept grasping way. By the looks of it, he has no problem in accomplishing that goal.
