Holiday break offers time for many students to wind down and unpack from the semester, allowing them to recharge and enjoy the season. With this upcoming break not too far away, many students are already asking each other what they will be doing. Whether students decide to enjoy their break from the comforts of their own home, or take a flight to a new location, these decisions reflect their unique goals, thoughts, and priorities during this festive season. This conversation opens up a unique dialogue between the charm and benefits of staying home for the break, versus going somewhere new. From either creating new memories this break, or simply taking a moment to yourself, this holiday season provides opportunities for both relaxation and joy.
Sunlake student, Ava Stiglic, stated that she’s excited to go away this break. “I’m looking forward to just getting a break from work stress, and also seeing my friends.” Ava is traveling to Virginia to visit her old friends that she hasn’t seen in over a year, with her voicing, “I can’t wait to see them.” When asked if travelling during this break enhances her overall experience, she explained that since she rarely gets to travel, it’ll be a relaxing feeling for her to visit her old town and break away from Sunlake culture for a moment. Leaving off on the question of how important relaxation is in comparison to the decision to travel, Ava exclaimed, “It’s about balance and having a little bit of both.” Ava’s excitement for this upcoming break overall comes from the mixture of being able to relax while traveling somewhere nostalgic.
Sunlake student Mariano Quiroga is excited for this break, because he will be able to relax and spend time by himself. “Yeah, last year I traveled to Bolivia, so it would just be nice to stay home, be cozy, and stay around my loved ones.” This warm, heartfelt comment shows a different perspective, showing that the enjoyment that someone may get from holiday break can come right from a local area instead of searching far for it. Mariano believes that going out can sometimes triumph staying home, but this year he would much rather enjoy having some time to de-stress and catch up on much-needed alone time. Mariano humorously said that, “I pretty much just want to bedrot this break.” Overall, Mariano admits that traveling would enhance his holiday experience, however, Mariano is choosing to stay home to have time to himself, and to go out and do simple things that he loves.
The responses from each of these students enhances the saying of a needed break, and showcases how this upcoming holiday break provides new perspectives on how a break should be spent.
