The feeling that something bad will happen even though nothing has occurred yet is called stress. Stress is seen in teens now more than ever before. They have so much on their plate, and are setting up their future while growing up at the same time. Being a teenager in today’s society often means going to school and having a job. The amount of stress that comes with both is challenging, and can often be difficult to deal with.
Teenagers are at what can be seen as the most crucial part of their life. They are finally becoming more mature, and are experiencing scenarios that they have never encountered. Tate Carlson, a student at Sunlake High School, said, “It can be hard sometimes, am still learning to balance everything while also trying to maintain that social status with my family and friends.” Teens often feel extremely stressed when they have all this going on. School and work takes up so much time alone, making spending time with friends is not easy. Another high school student, Sean Faircloth said, “I would say 60 percent of my life is taken up from work and school. For me personally, it is very difficult trying to manage school and work while trying to play baseball all at the same time.” Sixty percent of someone’s time being taken up in their teenage years is a lot, and that is not even counting extra curriculars like sports.
The emotions that come with school and work are often negative. Tate said, “I find that I can be stressed out and overwhelmed. It can be a lot at times and I’m often tired after a long week of work and school.” The majority of jobs teens have make them work on their days off of school, and they have them work on many of their weekends. When someone is drained from school then the time that is meant for them to relax is spent working; it ends up draining them. Sean said, “I’m constantly tired and am always having little sleep.” For some schools, people must wake up at 5 am after working till 11 pm the night before. That does not allow them to get a healthy amount of sleep, and can put them in a bad mood.
Overall, working and going to school causes a lot of stress, causing teens to miss out on things they enjoy and can put a lot of pressure on them. It usually too much for students to handle in the most crucial part of their life, which is why teens feel this way.
