Color Guard is a very time consuming sport Sunlake offers. With hard work and dedication each year the team goes on and wins numerous awards. Most students only get the chance to see their performances during football game half times, but it is only a small portion of what the team actually does. Senior, Haylie Chambliss talked about her experience being on the team. Haylie has been a member of color guard since her freshman year after being influenced by her sister on the Rushe middle school team. Haylie loves the sport because, “it’s a form of art”. The practices, “start with a stretch… [they then]… start a dance technique bock,” before running through their routine they perform at competitions against other schools. She then went on to explain how performance days can be, “quite stressful at times,” but the team is really good at calming each others nerves. Haylie made it clear that the grueling hours spent practicing outside in the heat definitely pay off with the relationships formed and the competitions won. Color Guard is more than the performance but the work that is put in behind the scenes to make something beautiful as a team.
