Sports are one of the many things we take pride in here at Sunlake. Our student athletes put their best foot forward, always representing the Seahawks and showing them what we can do. Jaylin Fuentes; sophomore, did exactly that at the fifth annual Beauty and the Beast Invitational that was held here at our very own nest.
Jaylin is a part of the Girls’ Wrestling team and competed against Steinbrenner, bringing pride to the school with a win. To prepare and ultimately dominate her match, Jaylin “practiced hard all week and ate healthy nutritious foods to fuel [her] body,” showing the importance of practice and keeping in shape. The only thing more important than preparing for a match is how you handle the aftermath, whether it was in your favor or not and assessing what you did right and what you can improve on. Jaylin “had water and talked to [her] parents,” in order to cool down after the match and realizes she could ” do better takedowns and escape from the bottom,” while knowing she did well “being on top and turning [her] opponent over.” It’s always important to reflect on the things you did well with just as much as the things that need work. Without a balance of both strengths and weaknesses, it’s too easy to get stuck in your own head; whether it’s through overconfidence or the opposite, anxiety.
Every athlete’s time to shine is different, whether it’s out on the field or on the mat, the adrenaline and rush of pride they feel after they do their very best is always the same. For Jaylin, that rush only continued as she brought home the win. With nearly two seasons already under her belt, we’re so excited to see what Jaylin will dish out next to bring pride to not only her team, but Sunlake as a whole.
