Sports are one of the most celebrate activities out there today. They do a multitude of things, like building strong sportsmanship and bringing together a diverse group of people that all love what they do. One of the many sports offered here at Sunlake is wrestling, which Sophomore Cameron Lord is a key part of.
Earlier this month, Cameron and the rest of the wrestling team went to District Duals, putting their all into their matches to bring something home. Cameron faced off in three matches, taking home wins in two of them and one loss. In one of her winning matches, Cameron “was losing and made a comeback with a pin”, making it all the more satisfying to say she won. Of course, they can’t all be wins. Cameron was “obviously not happy” with the loss, but she managed to “keep [her] head up for the next,” of her matches. Like all athletes, preparations for Cameron start the minute she wakes up and carry over until the end of the day. Cameron has to go into matches “mentally prepared,” so she can do the best she can on the mat. To do this, she keeps in her head that she is “going out there to wrestle her match,” and she will “do everything [she] can to win,” so any mental blocks she may have fade into the background as she prepares physically for a match. While the wrestlers “warm up all as a team,” to physically prepare herself, individually, Cameron is “usually pacing and bouncing around,” in order to be in the best possible condition she can. Regardless of is she wins or loses, Cameron believes “good sportsmanship is key,” which couldn’t be more true, especially when a sport fueled by competition and the drive to succeed is the subject.
Sports push athletes to their limits and encourage them to go beyond just what they can do. As Cameron Lord and the wrestling team continue their season, we can’t wait to see how they continue to push forward and prove to everyone what they are capable of on the mat.
