Girls Flag Football has made its debut as a new sport for schools in Pasco County. Sunlake High School held their first tryouts for the team on January 28th. There was a huge turnout, with everyone trying their hardest to make the team. The team is now made up of 19 talented players, with Senior Madylena Perez among them. Madylena said she was “…nervous for the tryouts, but they were fun.” The senior said that being on the team is really special, and it gives the girls, “…a chance to bond,” Mady also added, “and I’m really grateful for getting to play with them my senior year.” Madylena recently finished up her season of girls soccer, so making it onto the flag football team has given her the opportunity to hone in on her sportsmanship and athletic skills. This is the first year Sunlake has had a girls’ flag football team, and Madylena said being one of the first people on the team feels “…like a huge honor. In a way, it’s scary, because we are setting the bar, but it’s exciting.” The new team has come along with one of the best coaches our school has to offer, according to Madylena and her team. Coach Barbarise has been a positive influence on the team, and he has encouraged Madylena and her teammates to give their all on the field. The team is ready to give this season their all, and Madylena is sure to make the most out of her senior year with this team.
