Captain America: Brave New World is the start of a new era for Marvel and the character Captain America. Anthony Mackie’s first solo movie delivers an interesting take on politics and superhero action which blends with real-world stakes. Many critics seem to be divided on this movie, although the film offers a lot for Marvel fans to enjoy, especially the fans who were tired of the multiverse chaos.
The movie follows Sam Wilson learning to balance his new role as Captain America while dealing with a government demands from President Thaddeus Ross. The story begins to unfold as we are introduced to a peace treaty for a resource called adamantium. We then find out Samuel Sterns, who is a scientist full of vengeance after Ross promised him a pardon once he got in office and did not follow through. Sterns had been making pills that were keeping Ross alive but also fusing gamma radiation into his blood which ultimately leads up to Ross becoming Red Hulk. Some key scenes from the movie include a White House assassination attempt, mind-controlled soldier fights, and the final conflict where Ross became Red Hulk and fought Captain America through Washington D.C. Sterns originally planned for the U.S to inflict a war with Japan over the adamantium but Captain America stopped it from happening but couldn’t stop what was coming with Red Hulk and the White House.
Anthony Mackie shines in his new role as a relatable, non-superpowered hero, who prioritizes leadership and dedication rather than strength. His relationship with Danny Ramirez’s Falcons adds a sense of humor and heart, which was a nice touch. Harrison Ford also delivers an excellent performance as President Thaddeus Ross, and he was also impressive when it came to acting as the Red Hulk. Ford’s passion elevates his role in this movie.
While some movie critics are calling this movie “uninspired”, I found Brave New World engaging and entertaining. It doesn’t change the MCU dramatically but Mackie’s solid performance along with Ford’s passion and energy make it worth the watch. The focus on the government and thriller tone and smaller stakes are also refreshing after all of the recent multiverse movies and shows. I would recommend this movie for superhero fans who are seeking a more character driven story. It’s not a perfect movie with some CGI and pacing issues but the focus on the story really makes it worth the watch. I would rate this movie an overall 3.7/5. Sam Wilson’s unique approach makes this movie a great addition to the Captain America saga.
