Did you know that Sunlake has a hockey team? Well, not exactly. Hockey players here at Sunlake have to play for Cypress Creek’s club hockey team because we don’t have an official team at our school. Nathaniel Cortright, a junior here at Sunlake, plays for this hockey team and he loves it. “I wouldn’t trade it for anything. It gives me the chance to play such an amazing, fast paced, high contact sport with all my friends that I have been playing alongside since I was a kid,” Nate said with a smile. Although he loves the team and the community, he wishes that more people played. “The sport is underappreciated and it would really help if more people recognized games.” Nathan has been playing for the Cypress Creek team since the fall season of his sophomore year. But, before that he spent his season jumping between teams and zonings. “I played a season for Mitchell, and also played for Freedom for a while.” Without a team at Sunlake, players are forced to play for other schools. But unfortunately, the school zonings change, so players won’t always play for the same team every year. Nate believes that if we had a team at Sunlake many people would play and have a ton of fun. “A ton of kids that play on the Cypress Creek team are students at Sunlake, and I think we could make some sick jerseys too.”
Nate has been playing and watching hockey for around six years. He plans to play for Cypress next season for his senior year. He even plans to play hockey after high school. “Hopefully whatever college I end up at has a team so I can continue to play at a competitive level.” We can all cheer on Nate and the rest of the Sunlake hockey players in the fall season.
