It may seem nerve racking for some students when joining a new community, yet Sunlake sophomore Macey Whiteacre shoulders her first two weeks being a part of Yearbook Staff. With so much on her sleeve comes many things to think about — new people to connect with, new tasks to tackle, and new opportunities. She says, “It never crossed my mind that I’d be a part of yearbook.”
Just last year with Digital Design 1 on her schedule for freshman year, she now has opened and strengthened her creative abilities for design and now anticipates the photography aspect of Yearbook, being a great way to learn new things as well as freshen up on old ones.
She feels that a new door has opened for her high school career. Being a part of the Staffer community is one of the best ways to brush up on soft skills as well, she thinks. “I almost aspire to be an extrovert, […] people who have the natural ability to just… talk.” Her first year as a yearbook staffer puts herself out there and lets her be able to interact with people she hasn’t yet met. “I’m excited, but a little nervous—mostly because of the interviewing process—but also being a newcomer is a bit intimidating. That’s probably how I generally feel about being in any new space overall, though.”
Connections are an important facet to think about in school and for the future. “I joined Yearbook not only because I enjoyed Digital Design, but also because I wanted to be able to interact and socialize with my peers easier, having more fluid conversations with people, and being able to meet people I’ve never talked to,” explains Macey.
Many aspects of school are covered in the yearbook. She says, “The student life of Sunlake is what I’m most excited to explore. I look forward to photographing important school events.” As the year progresses, she’s excited to make lasting contributions to our yearbook and to form bonds within her new community.
