As a sophomore, Reese Gerhart has some strict expectations for herself, both academic and athletic. “Academically, I want to get A’s and B’s. I’m aiming more for A’s though.” Last year, Reese had A’s and B’s with a 3.7 gpa, and it’s obvious this year that she’s hoping to improve even more. “I’m also taking an AP class, so I definitely want to pass the class and my exam.” Only three weeks into school, and she’s already fulfilling her goals with A’s in every class. When asked what her favorite class was, her face brightened up and she answered, “My favorite class so far this year for me is chemistry, because I like doing a lot of labs. I find it really interesting and I actually enjoy learning in that class.” Despite not wanting a career in science, she says that she “enjoys the class.” Outside of school, Reese participates in flag football and weightlifting. Her club team attended the USA national championship for flag football in January of this year and they went to the semi finals, losing by only one point. Within the last 5 to 7 years, flag football has grown in popularity, Florida being 1 of 28 states to sanction the sport for high school girls. The new found popularity garnered the attention of players wanting it to be a part of school sports, Reese being one of them. Last year as a freshman, Reese made the newly-started flag football team at school, sporting the number 9. She made Pasco County history in June when she caught the first 1000 yard throw, receiving the well deserved “Game-Ball.” “I’ve been playing flag football for probably three years now. It’s only the second year for high school, so it’s still growing. I really like the coaches and I think it’s super fun,” she said smiling. Reese is shooting for the sky, but she’s already touched the stars.
