This year, Sunlake High School welcomed sophomore Sean McDonald, who transferred from K-Tech after earning a certificate in cybersecurity. Although K-Tech gave him unique opportunities, Sean decided the move to Sunlake was the right choice both academically and socially.
One of the first differences he noticed between the two schools was the layout; “Sunlake is bigger and only one story,” he said, adding with a laugh that the lunch schedule is wacko. While K-Tech had a smaller, specialized setting, Sean has been adjusting quickly to Sunlake’s larger campus.
K-Tech, a technical school with a strong STEM emphasis, focused heavily on practical skills. Sean reflected, “It was way more focused on practical knowledge that I will need in life.” While he valued the hands-on experience, he’s also eager to branch out into new subjects. At Sunlake, his favorite classes so far are digital design and math, though English has also stood out as an early favorite.
The transition to Sunlake has been smoother than expected. And reconnecting with familiar faces has helped him feel more at home. Still, he admits there are things he misses from K-Tech. “My friends,” he answered honestly when asked what he misses most. Even so, Sean’s technical background gives him confidence in his new environment. “I know how to fix some simple bugs, I have experience in digital arts, and it’s easy for me to work with the graphing calculator compared to others.”
Though classmates and teachers haven’t had to help him much since he already knew many students, Sean is looking forward to what lies ahead. His main goal for the year? “To get my life together,” he said with a laugh.
With his technical skills, curiosity, and determination, Sean is ready to make the most of his time at Sunlake—and he’s already off to a strong start.
