The first day of school was rapidly approaching, and Ms. Janess, Biology teacher, couldn’t contain her excitement. When asked about it, she said, “Seeing new faces and meeting students for the first time” was what she looked forward to the most. The week was a whirlwind of activity, but for Ms. Janess, the most memorable activity was “setting up the classroom and getting-to-know-you activities!” Ms. Janess wanted to make her students’ first week back feel as calm and normal as possible, even if chaos was happening in the halls. “I went for a home-like feel,” she explained. “I have posters that are academic, but I really wanted my students to feel like they could relate and relax.” Of course, no first week is complete without its funny moments. Ms. Janess exclaimed her yearly tradition of “trying to blow up a balloon for a demonstration, and watching it fly above and all around the classroom and students!” Looking ahead, Ms. Janess is excited and feeling enthusiastic about the year. “Watching students build their confidence and master test prep” is what she’s most looking forward to. Her goals for her students are clear: “To be honest always, comfortable with being themselves, find a hobby or outlet, and meet standard grade expectations.” To create a positive environment, she plans to “encourage collaboration and welcome instruments to be played in the class on free seat Friday each moth. Ultimately, meet each student where they are.” Ms. Janess’s contagious smile and excitement for this year is being passed throughout her students already!
