“We are the champions, my friends, And we’ll keep on fighting ’til the end” is one of the most famous lines written by Queen, their song rippling like a lasting effect throughout generations, inspiring many. Everyone wants to be a champion; the feeling of being on top of the world is enough to send anyone crazy with feelings of euphoria. When it comes to being a champion, Sofia Sierra isn’t new to the feeling. Winning game after game, leading her team to victory, is child’s play for her. She can tell you; after all, she and the rest of Sunlake’s varsity volleyball team became conference champions this year after beating Zephyrhills High School. Sofia said that she was “very confident leading up to the game. I thought it was going to be a light game. I knew we were going to all work as a team and just stay dynamic throughout the game and keep it fast-paced.” Sofia is the embodiment of confidence, with her cheery smile and bright personality. She’s able to light up any room and make anyone feel empowered. To prepare herself for the game, she tells herself “that I’m a great player on and off the court, and that this sport doesn’t define me.” And a great player she is; Sofia has been committed to D1 at the University of West Georgia. Playing for OTVA, one of the top teams in Florida and ranked #6 nationally, Sofia has shown countless coaches the amount of skill and work ethic she has. When asked about how she feels about being a D1 commit, Sofia’s eyes instantly lit up and she broke out into a dance, smiling brightly as she answered, “Oh my god, I love being a D1 volleyball player! I’m so excited for my future. I love that I proved people wrong.” For volleyball, the recruiting process is very strenuous: having to email coaches, attending camps and college campuses, and fighting to gain the top spots on a coach’s radar. Yet, she has done what only 1.2% of volleyball athletes can do…It’s the last set, tensions are high. Every set, every kill, inches both teams closer and closer to 25 points. Then, finally, Sunlake puts down the last ball, defeating Zephyrhills High School. The girls come running into each other, arms wrapped tightly as they cheer out in victory. “It was just perfect. Every single time I went a set, a point with this team, I just felt so grateful.”
