Mr. Webster is the Yearbook adviser at Sunlake and has been with Sunlake for eight years while working directly with the Yearbook for the last six. Having a new edition pushed out every year and a whole new staff every three years, the book goes through many changes. He explains that “In the past it’s been more of a picture book, kind of like a less–than–scrapbook worthy, to now, more of a purposeful design, where we’re now telling more deeper, robust stories about students and their perspectives on their experience as a high school student.” Mr. Webster came from Polk County where he taught at Lakeland High School for 18 years. He adopted the idea of the student newspaper after they’ve been putting out stories since the 1920’s. Mr. Webster found a rich history at Lakeland High School and “…wanted to bring something like that here to Sunlake.” While we start developing the 2023-24 yearbook, Mr. Webster said the most exciting part of the year is “…seeing students’ progress in certain realms, whether it’s writing or photography, and seeing their interest kind of continue to grow and to see them become an even stronger team member than what they were when they began.” After being in this program for such a long time, Mr. Webster has some amazing memories. His number one is “…seeing where students go after the fact. For example, Mikayla Gray. She’s the editor in chief for the student publication at the University of Central Florida.” Mr. Webster teaches the class camera techniques, how to conduct a great interview and how to submit great stories. In the end, a beautiful book gets made every year.
