Yearbook has been met with many new staffers. Among those new staff members is junior Maryam Victor. Maryam wanted to join yearbook, stating: “It’s an opportunity to learn new things, and I wanna be apart of a big community that covers school events.” Maryam’s goal this year for yearbook that she wants to achieve is “…better photography skills, and being able to see one of my stories in the finished product.” She later stated, “I’d like to learn more from the staff to achieve my goal.” The returning staff members are a huge inspiration to Maryam because she’s hoping to become one of the leading staff members who can guide the new staff one day.
Maryam wants to stay in yearbook for her next and final school year at Sunlake. “I’m planning to continue on through my senior year, and I’m hoping to become an editor.” While yearbook is important to Maryam, it’s not the only interest she has. “I’ve played soccer for 4 years now, since 8th grade,” she explains. She’s hoping that through knowing most of the soccer team she can get some good interviews from them for yearbook. But getting interviews from her friends isn’t the only way she’s going to get good stories. Maryam thinks yearbook is a very good social opportunity. “I wanna use my friends as connections to meet new people to interview.” Maryam is hoping that she’ll get to hear many interesting stories from many new interesting people.
While being apart of the yearbook community is very important to Maryam, she’s not planning on pursuing any career in journalism or photography in the future. “I wanna attend USF and hopefully attend med school to become a pediatrician.” While she does love using technology and has a passion for digital design, studying medicine is much more along the lines of what she’d rather do for a career. For now, yearbook is an important experience to Maryam and she’s looking forward to getting to know her fellow new staff members, and becoming apart of a fun, creative, and slightly chaotic community.
