Mrs. Cray puts the C in creative. Mrs. Cray is the anatomy teacher at Sunlake, and she taught her kids about the structure of the skin and all the elements involved in building up the skin layers. So, this week she tasked her anatomy students with making tissue boxes to represent the skin. Each side of the tissue box focused on a different layer or section of the skin. They were to gather materials like cotton balls, construction paper, and yarn. There were no restrictions at all with the materials they were allowed to use.
Junior Verena Basilious voiced her opinion about the project. Her love for studying science led her to choose this class. She aspires to go into the medical field and taking anatomy was one step towards that goal. When asked what her favorite part of the class is, she replied, ” I like the hands-on projects. I think they are very fun.” Verena explained that Mrs. Cray gave them time in class to work on their projects and provided them with a lot of materials, in case anyone was missing things or needed extra items. For Verena the project ran smoothly, she did not have any problems occur during the process of creating it. She planned it out on a piece of paper and then got to crafting. She believes that the assignment was great and she wouldn’t change anything about it.
The project allowed the students to work together, they spoke to each other about their plans before they started, if they needed any help they discussed issues with each other, and they bounced off of one another’s ideas. Allowing them to get even more creative. Verena mentioned she “…enjoyed doing it because most of my classes are just like, writing stuff or typing something in and handing it in. But it was just fun getting all the materials together and being creative.” Projects like this help bring students together as they collaborate to get ideas. They also make class more fun and they help the kinesthetic learners understand the lesson more.
