Every year in Florida, there is the risk of hurricanes. This year, a category 3 hurricane by the name of Idalia hit Florida. At Sunlake High School, sophomore Briana Mcgregor was a little worried about this storm. As the weather increasingly got worse, more people were going to stores and stocking up on resources. Briana herself was worried about “…not knowing how long we could be out for.” While school was out and she had to stay home, she worked “…on homework and slept.” To make sure she didn’t get behind, she finished her assignments in advance and worked ahead. Days before the hurricane, she prepared like everybody else. Most adults will go out and get food as well as shutters to protect their windows. They also get sandbags if they live near water in order to hopefully stop flooding. Briana said that she prepared by “…getting most of my school work done ahead, so I would have less homework to do at home.” She also mentally prepared for the hurricane by getting into “…the hurricane mentality with school work and sports.” When most people hear there is a hurricane, they prepare mentally and physically for anything that might go wrong. While most Floridians who have lived here for a while aren’t too worried about hurricanes, the new people that move every year take the most steps to prepare themselves. The only thing she was worried about was that “…the hurricane might take out school days depending on how bad it is.” Every year it’s the same story about a hurricane projected to hit Tampa, and we go through the same cycle. Everyone learns to appreciate life a little more.
