Sparkling dresses hang on racks in countless department stores, loud music rings through the hallways, and the lines between what is reality and what is a fantasy begin to blur. Homecoming week is a popular high school tradition that is celebrated in many different ways. At Sunlake High School, this includes various dress up days throughout the week, allowing students to showcase their school spirit. One of these dress up days was Rhyme Without Reason where students and their friends each dressed as things that rhymed with absolutely no correlation. Seniors Kegan Bowman and Ivanna Todd chose Sleeping Beauty and Call of Duty as their dress up theme and they won the morning competition. “My brother came up with the idea and he ended up not using it,” Ivanna said. “I knew Kegan and I could pull it off. Sleeping Beauty has been my favorite princess since I was little, so I thought it would be fun. Also, I already had my quinceañera crown and it was perfect.” Rhyme Without Reason wasn’t the only dress up day during homecoming week. Others included Future Me Monday, Tunes Tuesday, and Class day. “I enjoyed dressing up this week,” Kegan said. “It’s my senior year so I felt like going all out this year and it’s been a lot of fun, especially with today’s costume.” “I was able to do something for every day this week,” Ivanna said. “I get to be someone new for a week and it lets me be creative. It’s always fun to see just how far people go and I like how people actually participate.” Dress up days aren’t the only homecoming tradition. Powderpuff, skit, the homecoming game, and the homecoming dance are all aspects of homecoming that students look forward to. “I always look forward to Homecoming every year,” Kegan stated, “It’s always been fun.” “I love homecoming so I can have an excuse to buy a new pretty dress,” Ivanna said, “Because this is my last year, I hope it’ll be memorable and fun!”
