The freshman at Powderpuff had a twist this year. Only three boys—Shai Ron, Vaughan Edwards, and Gabriel Sorell—ended up cheering for the girls playing football. They initially had eight members, but the other boys eventually dropped out due to nervousness and extracurricular activities like sports.
For Shai and Vaughan, being in student council was a huge motivation to stay and learn the dance. Junior Adam Ron, Shai’s brother, told Shai it would be fun to participate. The boys had a great time learning the cheer choreography and loved working together. Shai and Vaughan both agree that working with Gabriel was “…better than just us two.” Vaughan commented, “You just got to own it.” They had no issues learning the dances. As Vaughan puts it, “most of our dances were built around having three people.” For two months, they put in a lot of effort, rehearsing for two hours twice a week. According to Shai at Powderpuff “…it was first a little weird in the beginning…” for them to perform in front of so many students, “…but it ended a lot better.” Shai and Vaughan can both agree that their cheer turned out to be special.
Despite their efforts, both the cheerleaders and the football players for the freshman team ended up in last place. Overall, the boys cherished their time together with their shiny shorts and cropped shirts. Vaughan admits, “We weren’t loud enough.” The only thing that Shai and Vaughan say they would change is that they definitely want more people to come out and cheer next year.
