Having to think about what college to attend is a frightening thought for most. Luckily, Sunlake offers a field trip for juniors and seniors to look at colleges across Florida. Senior Galilea Estrada was thrilled to get the opportunity to tour different schools so she could get a better look at where she truly wanted to go. The reason she was excited for the field trip in the first place was because she “…wanted to know more about campus life and know the pros and cons about each college.” While she was feeling ecstatic to go on the trip, Galilea couldn’t help but feel somewhat upset before visiting what could be one of her future schools. “I felt like I knew that I wasn’t gonna have my major in there, but I was determined to still go and find out what’s there,” she explained. Galilea wants to major in zoology, the study of the behavior and physiology of animals. “The only zoologist program is at UF.” She explained that she felt slightly conflicted while on the trip because, “At FSU, the campus was amazing; I fell right for it. However, UF has my major,” she said, torn. While the decision was very hard, she came to the conclusion that she wants to attend UF because her major is very important to her. “I was always either going to be at UF or out of state.” Galilea has a very close connection with animals, so she feels that she would regret it if she gave up the opportunity to study a subject she’s passionate about. She had figured out what she wanted to do at a very young age. “I’ve always known; I’ve always been connected to wild animals, all animals, I just get too attached to them. So I knew it was either zoologist or marine biologist, anything relating to animals.” Galilea had doubts, but she was mainly excited to go on the trip. It definitely lived up to her expectations. She described herself on the trip as “…very excited, cause I was with my friends and I got to see other colleges and get an idea of what it’s like.” Galilea and her friend group got to visit many colleges and they all had a fun time doing so. “We went to Florida Atlantic University, GCU, FIU, FSU, Flagler, Lin University, and we actually went to the State Capital.” Majority of the group liked FSU the most, including Galilea. Now that she is home again after seeing a glimpse of college life, she feels very optimistic for her future. “It was fun, I would recommend it to a lot of people. Even though you’re away from home for a while, it’s a good opportunity to find everything you’re looking for… it’s honestly amazing.” Galilea hopes that everyone got to have the same positive experience that she did while on the trip and really find what they’ve been looking for.
