Sunlake High School’s Amnesty International is basically a fancy way of saying Human Rights Club. The club deals with topics like banned books, free speech, and other similar topics. One of the officers is junior Nora Ware as treasurer. In the interview, she noted that in the amnesty club they “…engage in civilized discussion.” These meetings are mostly to bring awareness to issues that plague the world like Covid-19 in 2020. The members of the club propose their “…own argumentative positions” allowing the discussion to continue, with members who have similar interests/goals, and having community projects go on as a part of the club. Unlike other clubs, this one not only interacts with the members, they also interact with other students, allowing the club to apply their expertise, their ideas, and their plans to help the community. For example, at their first meeting, they made posters on the issue of book banning. It is quite an inviting group, allowing anyone to have their own opinions on subject matters, and allowing these ideas to be shared among the club’s members. This accepting atmosphere makes it quite welcoming to all students, as they are focused on humanitarian topics, as well as current matters in the community, allowing for just about anyone to provide suggestions for many different events, even allowing for discussion of controversial topics.
