This year, junior Brandon Burroughs and his family continued their tradition of decorating their house for the Halloween season. However, their house is not like other houses in the Bexley area. Brandon’s mom runs an online business that sells decorations so every Halloween their house is the highlight of the neighborhood, completely covered in tombstones, skeletons, and ghosts.
“My mom really loves Halloween,” Brandon explained. “This is her all-time-favorite season. Ever since I was a little baby she’s always decorated every house that we’ve moved into.” His mom confirmed that they have been doing this for about seventeen years. She and Brandon’s dad are the ones who decided the theme and how to decorate. Last year, their house was themed after the Tim Burton film Beetlejuice. They have not taken inspiration from any specific movie this year, but their house is still covered in various skeletons and ghosts.
“I grew up in England and we didn’t have Halloween,” Brandon’s mom said, explaining how this tradition came about. “When I came here, I was ten years old and my mom gave us costumes and had us decorate the house. I just thought it was the most amazing thing. Ever since then I’ve just loved it.” Their family has even won some awards for their displays. Thirteen years ago, Gemmy Industries—popular for their inflatable decorations—held a national contest in which Brandon and his family won.
