Sunlake’s boys soccer seahawks are back and ready to kick their way through the competition this year. They have already conquered the first two games for the preseason portion of the year. Starting with Springstead, shutting them down 5 to 0, with Nick Kriel scoring 2 goals and David Gutierrez scoring 3. The most recent game was against Parish Community High School. The Seahawks protected their nest and won 5-1. Matias Gonzalez scoring 2 goals, David Gutierrez again this time with 2 goals, and a banger by Corey Carter. These wins got the players excited for the upcoming season.
David Gutierrez, a junior on the varsity team, who is also a captain, is very pumped for this season. To mentally prepare for the game the players gathered in the locker room hyping each other up and “…saying we’re going to win and we just want to start the preseason well.” Physically, to prepare, they got on the field to “…warm up and stretch, along with some music.” As a tradition, the boys always get down on one knee and take a moment to pray with the team before the starting eleven get on the field. Those eleven always huddle up and have a quick talk right before they get into their positions. Going into the game, David was confident that they were going to win. During the game, “…everyone played really well; we got a lot of goals. I think we can always improve, but we went out there and did what we had to do.” Communication is something that David thinks could be improved. Talking with the team on the field is always a great way to execute successful plays. David’s favorite part of the game is the “…feeling of winning. It’s the best feeling in the world.” He also dribbled past the goalie on one of his goals, which he recalls was his favorite moment. Throughout the whole game the team had so much energy and were having fun playing. Overall, the team did great and had a much earned win.
