Sunlake’s National Art Honors Society is an outlet for creativity for the Seahawk artists to express themselves. The members of this club are all very creative individuals who get to practice art without the restraint of being graded on their work. Senior Sofia Castillo joined this club in order to be able to make art with some of her close friends and peers. Sofia expresses how the community “…is very welcoming” and that she enjoys having a space to do “…creative, crafty things together” with other artists. Sofia reiterates that she loves “…sharing a space with other crafty-minded people…” which creates a unique community within Sunlake.
At the most recent meeting, Sofia and her peers “…made Christmas ornaments out of clay slabs…” by rolling the clay flat and cutting out shapes. This senior made magnets inspired by a video game as a gift for her friend.
Each student was able to create whatever design they desired without worrying about critique. They also experimented with a medium that they may not use on a regular basis. Fortunately for Sofia, this meeting focused on her preferred medium: clay. She enjoys this medium so much and plans to keep making “…clay as a hobby after high school while pursuing a degree in physics.” The upperclassman states how she “…can mold and shape it to whatever imaginable.” This proves to be true as all the students in the club were told to make ornaments, but all made something different. Some people took the festive route and made snowflakes or gingerbread men, but others made stars, hearts, flowers, or icons from video games. Regardless of what the students made, they were all able to create what they desired and support the other members around them. This artistic crew makes beautiful creations and makes it seem so easy. However, most importantly, these students are able to lift each other up in a safe space doing what they love most.
