On Monday November 6th, Sunlake High School held their signing for National Honors Society, also known as NHS. An NHS signing is an initiation ceremony where extraordinary high school students are chosen. During the ceremony, students are called to a stage to sign an initiation book and receive an award. To be chosen, students must go above and beyond based on four criteria: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Senior Henry Bourtman received the honor of being elected to the National Honors Society. In Henry’s own words, he said, “NHS is a great club to be in because it leads you to opportunities for colleges, like scholarships. At the ceremony itself, it was fun to have my family and friends be there to watch me succeed.” What motivated Henry to apply for the NHS was the college opportunities that could be provided by being in it. What mostly helped Henry stand out to the National Honors Society was leadership, service, and character. He stated, “I got nominated from probably being in Student Council, Key Club, and a lot of other extracurriculars. Also what I do outside of school, whether if it’s playing hockey or volunteering.” Henry felt enlightened and honored to be called up to receive the award in front of his peers.
