There are many different clubs at Sunlake, all with varying purposes and goals. No two are the same and that’s what makes being in clubs so exciting. Amnesty club was created as a way for students to advocate for human rights, and work together to take actions for the cause. Senior Kate Hoffman is a part of the club and she “…joined the club at the beginning of the year after it was reestablished.” She said, “…It is a great way to spread awareness and help people around the world regarding issues with human rights.”
Even though Sunlake’s Amnesty club is just one small group of high school students, they are able to advocate for many different people around the world. Kate says the they “…aim to help those experiencing human rights issues internationally, one example being letter campaigns,” which is what they happened to be doing. At their most recent meeting, they were “…taking part in the Write for Rights campaign, which was created by Amnesty International. The goal of it is to persuade governments or people of authority to help people who have had their freedoms attacked.” Every student had the opportunity to write their own letter and speak out for the rights that they believe in. Along with what they are already working on, Kate hopes that in the future they can, “…do something regarding climate change and improving our environment.” The Amnesty Club has a great purpose, as well as an amazing group of people involved in it who want to help make change for the good.
