Naomi Lammers is a sophomore at Sunlake High School. As with a lot of other residents in Florida, she has a very noticeable and potent admiration for the beach, even going so far as to say, “It’s one of my favorite things about Florida.” Due to this, her favorite type of animals are sea creatures like sharks, fish, sea stars, etc. She seems to really appreciate the simplicity and soothing nature of the beach. The gentle sounds of waves crashing on the beach can help put people to sleep and the simple enjoyment of resting on a quiet beach can be quite relaxing. Her fascination with sea life is quite infectious. With this intriguing fascination, came a quite interesting choice of favorite animal: sharks. Normally, sharks are feared, because of being predominantly cast as antagonists or even straight up villains, like in Jaws, but in reality, they only attack people because they confuse us for fish or seals. Sharks go for quick kills, as not to waste too much energy. Her choice of shark being her favorite makes sense from a scientific perspective. Sharks are also a very interesting fish species, considering the two largest sharks: the Whale Shark and the Basking Shark. These species eat things thousands of times smaller than them, considering that they are filter feeders. They’re harmless to people because of how gentle they are; not as gentle and unassuming as the Sea Cow, but definitely still quite gentle.
