The Beauty and the Beast weightlifting and wrestling competition is a yearly event that Sunlake hosts. They invite several other schools to join in the exciting event. This year, the gym was filled with wrestlers and girls weightlifters, as well as their friends and family who came to support. Junior Makayla Tankson shared her experience, as it was her first time competing at Beauty and the Beast. “I started weightlifting last summer after school ended so that I could be healthy and make more friends because it seemed really welcoming,” said Makayla. Although she is still fairly new to the sport, she was able to compete at the event which is a huge accomplishment in itself. Since half of the gym was also being used for wrestling, there was a different feel than a normal weightlifting meet. Makayla liked how many people there were because, “…it was very loud and that helps me to make my lifts rather than it being super quiet. It was also really fun to see so many people that I knew.” She said that “…the meet was pretty busy, and it ended about an hour after we thought it would.” Makayla got first place in her weight class and a new personal record for clean and jerk at the meet, which she is super excited about. Overall, she said that, “…the meet was fun, I had a good time, and I love the sport.” The Beauty and the Beast meet was a success, with the wrestling and weightlifting team both finishing in first place.
