Every week, Students here at Sunlake enjoy participating in different activities within the many classes offered. While academic classes are an important part of a student’s daily school life, there are many artistic and creative options available to students. Art classes allow students to express themselves and provide a less structured classroom environment throughout the day.
One such class offered is AP Art, where students have been spending time working on projects in which they must choose a theme and produce a project based on said theme. One student, Junior Shaylin Middleton, offered to share what her project was about. “I chose fear as my theme” Shaylin explained, saying she “…asked my friends what their deepest fears are for inspiration.” When asked about why she chose the theme, Shaylin explained “The reason I chose Fear for my theme is because everyone’s fears are different; even if two people are scared of the ocean one person may be scared of what’s under them and one may be scared of drowning. It’s a very interesting concept to me.” Shaylin said she used her own fears as inspiration “as a way to face the beauty inside of the fear.” Shaylin has always loved sculpting and therefore chose to use clay to make her project, a sculpture of a raven.
Another student taking AP Art is senior Rachel Hill. Rachel explained that her project was based on a story she wishes to write “…where a diverse cast of characters have to go on quests and fight evil.” She detailed that “I wanted to show these characters and each of their unique personalities in very different ways.” Rachel explained that she is using different media to portray different characters in her story. For example, Rachel explained “other projects I plan to do are things like making a wooden figure of one of my characters from my story.” Rachel also mentioned using different color palettes and designs in her projects. It’s great that students here at Sunlake are able to explore their various passions and that they are given the option to choose classes that match those passions, like art! Meeting with their counselors and checking digital announcements are both great ways for Sunlake students to stay informed on all the great programs and classes offered, including specialized ones (like art) that allow students to explore their unique passions.
