The class of 2024 crowned their homecoming king and queen this September at the football game before the big dance. The seniors, Olivia Sutton and Danny Storchevyi were crowned Sunlake royalty for this year’s court. Both students are very involved in school activities and are members of student council. The two seniors had run for homecoming court in previous years and they knew they wanted to seize their last opportunity. In order to get the nominations and votes they needed, they were very strategic about their campaigning. For Danny, he posted photos on his Instagram and Snapchat stories encouraging people to vote for him. These posts would then be shared by others and circulated around the whole class. For Olivia, she used social media as well, but also texted her close friends “…to tell their friends to spread the word.” All the students on the court have learned to be strategic about how they can get the most votes, so Danny felt “…the ballot was strong…” and the competition was tight. Along with running for the court itself, the seniors took part in the other activities during homecoming week. Olivia found the most joy in skit even though it was “…unconventional this year, but still one of the most special events.” For Danny, he coached girls’ Powderpuff and took part in the boys’ routine, so this event was his favorite. He believed having these roles gave him “…the opportunity to be super involved.”
When it came to the homecoming game, the students picked outfits that they coordinated with their running mates. Danny ran with Ava Edwards, with whom he matched his suit to. Olivia ran with Armando Cabrera and took on a unique approach. The two wanted to match a Taylor Swift era to their outfits. The two of them are big fans and decided on “Reputation”, so they “…ended up in all black and silver” to match the album. When the winners were announced, Olivia was shocked and “…so happy hearing the crowd cheer” and Danny felt that “winning homecoming king was bizarre” and unexpected because of the great competitors. The aspect of being on court these two both enjoyed most was the Jeep ride around the track. This truly felt like royalty to the seniors and they also got to have their own bios announced to the school.
