Sunlake’s student council is always looking at ways to engage with the student body, with many being unique and based on the current events at school. Not only that, some events held by the council might be based on the current time of year. On December 12th, Sunlake’s student council gave out cups of Hot Chocolate to anyone who lined up before school near the band room (near where the busses drop off students). Members of the student council later commented on the event in interviews.
Senior Danny Storchevyi was one member of the student council who was asked about the event. He explained where the idea of the event came from. “In student, we have something called do good December, and so for the last three years we’ve been giving out hot coco in the mornings.” Danny explained. He said that he didn’t personally come up with the idea, but the council decided to continue it annually. Danny explained his role, saying, “I was working on getting hot coco out there and making sure everyone had what they needed.” He mentioned that from his point of view, every year the lines of students looking to get some hot coco before class get longer and longer, and when asked about what he thinks the students of Sunlake thought about the event, he said “I think they loved it, I herd a lot of people say they liked hot coco days… I mean there was a huge line.” Danny ended by saying, “I hope they do it next year; I hope they keep doing it again and again.”
Another member of the student council, senior Ava Edwards also commented on the event. “I really liked it. This is something we have been doing for a couple of years now and it’s always exciting” Ava said, mentioning that the weather this year was perfect to give out hot coco thanks to the low temperatures. “It made me really excited that there was a long line and that people wanted this.” Ava said. She detailed the process of preparing to begin handing out the hot chocolate, explaining that the council setup tables, used large coffee heating vats to warm up water, and mixed hot chocolate mix into the heated water to make the drinks. Having a dedicated student council is one of the many great aspects of Sunlake’s student body and the long line of students early in the morning looking for a warm cup of free hot chocolate before class certainly attests to that!
