The Sunlake Band recently held their Winter Showcase, an event that senior Roman Muniz performed in. He described it as their “…annual winter concert…” filled with ensemble pieces in addition to solos and duets. Furthermore, Roman added, in reflection of the holiday season, there were many “…ugly Christmas sweaters, Santa hats, and a festive repertoire.” Within the band, Roman is a percussionist and explained that he does not stick to one instrument but rather varies. He played “…sleigh bells and crash cymbals for a wind ensemble…” but in a mallet quartet, he took on the marimba.
Roman has been playing percussion since 9th grade. Looking back on the experiences he had with the Sunlake band, he described the best part as the performance itself. Regardless of the setting, he said “…nothing is more satisfying than knowing that the audience enjoyed your performance…” Roman particularly loved how the winter concert in question created a “…fun and laidback experience…” for everyone watching. Although he had not been planning to pursue concert percussion in college, his inspiration to do so is increasing. He hopes to attend the University of Florida and although he will not be a music major, he would be happy to pursue it “…more like a hobby.” Looking back on the Winter Showcase, Roman said it went great, “…we got to celebrate the holidays with family and put on a laidback show of Christmas spirit.” The evening also provided space to recognize some outstanding fine arts students such as the Tri-M inductees and members of the Pageantry Arts Honor Society. Overall, Roman is grateful for his experiences in the Sunlake band and looks forward to seeing where percussion will take him in the future.
