Senior Promise Walker attended an assembly in the gymnasium discussing Sunlake’s Code of Conduct. Each class attended a separate assembly about the same topic, where students “…talked about the Code of Conduct,” and competed against other classmates. To encourage participation, the students who answered correctly won prizes. The Seahawks could choose between sunglasses, a sticker, a charging cable, or other Sunlake-themed merchandise. A brave senior, Promise, decided to go up after hearing she could win a prize. Promise went head-to-head with another senior and answered her question correctly. Promise was able to walk away with a new pair of SLHS sunglasses. She was already quite knowledgeable on the rules, but from the assembly, she learned “…that the senior class has the least number of referrals.” This is a great thing for the senior class to hear, and represents the maturity of the students. This senior believes these assemblies are important to make sure “…everyone is aware of what is expected…” and the staff members are able to make it a fun experience. Having incentives to participate in these events makes it much more engaging for students, ensuring they take actually take something away. Promise prefers being able to win prizes and compete rather than just being lectured by the staff.
