Mr Aguiar is the AP Psychology and Sociology teacher at Sunlake High School. Currently, his AP Psychology students finished up a unit about testing and intelligence and are about to start a new unit on psychologic disorders. His Sociology classes are discussing the Harlow Monkey Experiment, which seems interesting. He is very hopeful about his AP Psychology students, even going so far as to say that they “are constantly above county, state, and national averages!” His enthusiasm for his student’s success is infectious, and his calm demeanor is quite respectable. He takes an active role in his student’s learning, willing to assist his students if they need it, and his lectures are engaging for students, as he applies a concept of psychology in them. Each time a student gets a question correct, they are rewarded with a lollypop, which demonstrates the psychologic principle of positive reinforcement, the addition of a pleasant stimulus to reinforce a behavior. He maintains his students focus on a topic by asking questions about the lesson’s topic during the lecture. He also is open to having questions asked during the lecture, which allows his students to get clarification about a certain part of the lecture, and he will make sure to answer the question to clarify what the student needs clarification on. He can be strict sometimes, but it is because he wants to see the students that he teaches succeed, and his active teaching style is a great help to that goal. He is quite attentive, making sure his students are paying attention and brings up examples when needed in his lectures. This, in coordination with his helpful attitude, allows all of his students a fair chance at success in his class, despite the high difficulty of the classes he teaches.
