For many years, the girls weightlifting team at Sunlake has always had super fun and successful seasons. This year, they made it to districts, and won, making them nine-time district Champions. They then advanced to Regionals and placed 2nd in the Traditional division, as well as 4th in Olympic. Nine of the girls who went to regionals also got the amazing opportunity to advance to states, which was the final meet of the season for the team, and for some of them it was their last meet of high school. Coach Hodros, coach for this team, shared how he felt the meet went. He said, “…We competed very well. there were a few who I know struggled a bit here and there, and we could have had one or two more girls place, but we did have three overall that placed.” Those three girls were, “…Adia Tomlinson who placed 5th in traditional, Makayla Tankson who Placed 5th in Olympic and 6th in traditional, and Jenifer Estrada who placed 4th in traditional.” To prepare for the competitive state meet, they had, “…normal practice, as it was a process throughout the entire season with my programming,” said Coach Hodros. He explained how it was key to peak at the right time, and how the team has seen many other competitive meets like this that they had prepared for. “…The girls were pretty well prepared for this meet,” he stated. Coach Hodros’s goal for next year’s season is to win states. “…We are going to have a really good shot of winning state next year, and I’ve been saying it since the beginning of this year that it will be more of a build up for next year, so I have high hopes for next season,” he said, and he is excited to bring home that state title.
Coach Hodros’s favorite memory from the season was something special that showed him how much he meant to the team. “After state was done I had a parent give me a thank you box that was put together by all the kids, and even thank you’s from the alumni. It meant a lot to me because January was a tough and stressful month for my family,” He said. This season meant so much to the team, coaches, and all of the family involved in it, and it has definitely set the bar high for the future.
