For some, summertime is a time to avoid all things school, but for others it is an opportunity to expand their educational horizons and learn new things. Junior Naomi Lammers traveled to Annapolis, Maryland, to attend a STEM summer camp at the United States Naval Academy. “It was an excellent camp for me because I love engineering and aviation,” Naomi said. At this summer camp, Naomi had the opportunity to attend classes about reverse engineering, soldering and circuits, storm chasing, and bioterrorism. She got to participate in fun interactive activities like building a hurricane proof house and testing it in a wind tunnel and connecting a circuit to her phone. “My favorite thing we did was a unit about helicopters and lift,” Naomi said. The naval academy also took the camp to Washington, D.C., where Naomi got to visit the Smithsonian Museums. While Naomi was there, she was a part of a squad with four other kids led by a midshipman who attended the academy. “I loved coming to the naval academy because it was really cool to meet new people from around the country,” Naomi said. “I got to learn lots of new things, and explore the campus, which is absolutely gorgeous. It was an experience I’ll definitely not forget.”
