Summer is sophomore Alexis Warr’s favorite time of the year. While most kids will be spending the time off from school sleeping in or going to the beach, Alexis has a summer tradition she’s been doing since she was in 5th grade. “I love Camp Highland, I love going there, I always have so much fun,” Alexis said. Alexis has been attending Camp Highland, a summer camp in Orlando Florida, for many summers now. “My favorite part of the experience has to be getting to see all of my friends again, cause like, we only ever see each other at this time of the year, but when we do see each other it’s like the best thing in the world… they’re all so funny and we just have a good time together.” Alexis described Camp Highland as “…One of the funnest places to be.”. She said that she gets a lot of comments from her peers saying that going to Summer camp is dumb or childish, but to put it in her words “they’re just jealous.” There’s plenty to do at camp. It can get as complex as playing a sport while you’re there, to as simple as just hanging with your friends and talking. Alexis says she wouldn’t give up a single opportunity to go back to Summer camp, but her Summer plans may be slightly different for next year. “This is my first year coming to Sunlake, we moved from Orlando to Land ‘o’ Lakes… I still went to camp this Summer but unfortunately it’s a lot harder to make it there when you’re living hours away.” Alexis said. Fortunately, she isn’t worried about what this means for her friends at camp. “The memories we’ve made together will last a lifetime, I’m not like sure what exactly will happen next year, but I know that we’ll keep in touch and we’ll have all the good times we’ve had together to remember…” Alexis has no doubt about her camp friends sticking with her this school year, but she is nervous about starting school at Sunlake. “It’s kind of hard when you’ve just adjusted to going to high school, and then you have to adjust to going somewhere new again you know?” She said nervously. But Alexis knows that in the end, she’ll make it through and she’ll be fine, just like how she was when she first started going to Camp Highland. “…I really hope that here I can find some people and experience some fun things with them just like how I did at camp.” While Alexis is still hesitant about the new school year, she knows she can’t pass up a new adventure.
