Mask of the Flame (Poem)

A Poem by Isabella Gray

Isabella Gray, Staffer

Her smile shines bright

Impossible to extinguish

The bright flame that burned within her

But the illness of fear knows no bounds

It’s retardant clear and heavy

Forcing a shield over that smile

Forcing her far away

Can a light shine through the concrete?

So solid, meant to last

Can a smile shine through the cloth?

Meant to keep all else back?

So sadly, she scaled the halls

Her light slowly dimming

Alone she was not,

But she surely never knew it

Her sadness continued to grow

But her heart kept on beating

She crumpled in the dark

Alone and defeating

Until a light shone

The beam of understanding

The beam of hope

It guided her towards a new beginning

Goodbye to the old world

It was fine while it lasted,

But the present is now

The future is now

The worst times are over

You’re not alone

You never were
Let your fire burn bright

Never lose sight
Of what is now

And what lies ahead

You
Are
Not
Alone
You
Are
Special
You
Are
Enough.
